I'm starting to get sick of seeing terrible EarthBound "original characters"/mary-sue's/gary-stu's on a daily basis. I snapped yesterday when I saw an EarthBound original character that claimed to have fucking neck snapping powers (no joke), which really annoyed me to death.
So this is gonna be a few simple steps of advice to make a good EarthBound original character.
1) Past and backstory
You don't need a dramatic past or dark backstory to make your character interesting. Say, if your character saw their parents die in front of him/her, it's only okay if the character gets over it and doesn't act like a complete emo Final Fantasy character.
It's fine if you make your character witness a death, but don't make them turn into an emo for the rest of their life over it. They can remorse over it of course, but when they constantly are depressed over it, that's just a poor attempt to copy Lucas's back story.
2) PSI powers
I can't emphasize this enough. It's all well and good to have PSI powers on a character, but make sure their special move isn't a mary-sue and gary-stu power. Let's get something straight-- we know PK Love and PK Rockin' are basically big bursts of energy that will blow you to pieces. PK Starstorm is basically a ton of explosions.
Your character can have psychokinetic powers, but they don't really need them. I've seen good EarthBound original characters can be just as good without powers but don't make your character's special ability CONTROL FUCKING TIME. It's mary-sue material-- tons!
3) Altered versions of a character aren't original characters or as good as people make them out to be
This is kind of a personal nerve, but just because you make a character's dark side come out doesn't make it an entirely new character. We've all seen PKNess012364's Werewolf Ness-- that's fine-- but then you see things like Dark Lucas. Just because you put dark before their name doesn't make them an entirely new character.
And then you see other werewolf characters like Were-Lucas. COME ON! Now you're just being a ripoff! I don't give a 5 minute fuck how much you add onto their name, it doesn't change the fact that it's out of god damn character.
I'll smack ya with a rolled up newspaper over it. People like PKNess012364 do altered characters well because they don't take too much pride in the character, and every drawing/doodle they do isn't about them.
4) Take advice/constructive criticism and don't set your character in stone
Okay, basically I've seen most original character owners act like complete whiney dumbasses all because someone gave some advice and constructive criticism
if you really want your character to get tons better, then you WANT constructive criticism and advice; altered character or original character.
It helps you learn where this character has problems. Don't set the character in fucking stone like the 10 god damn commandments. Your character will look more mary-sue/gary-stu all because you refuse to take the smallest bit of constructive criticism. I'm sick of coddling these assholes like they're Call of Duty players, all because their crying over small advice.
This is the muscle and meat of your character. Don't try to steal Lucas's back story just for dramatics (I know I already blew my water at step 1 over the witnessing parent's death thing), but try to give your character a personality that isn't as bland as an inert brick or that's entirely fucking cutesy, angry, or depressed. Those are not personalities, their just annoying mary-sues.
Anyway, thank you for reading. These are just my opinions and some advice that could be used at your will. These again are nothing more than my opinions. I just had to do this after I saw 3 terrible OCs/altered characters last night.
